The Quiet Part(s) Loud (2023)
Joel Ferst | saxophone Amrutha Koteeswaran | flute Ellen Sirower | piano Mei Liu | violin Casey Boyer | viola Sophie Matheiu | cello |
Noise: an undesired sound, or one that interferes with hearing, a style of dissonant rock music, the natural or routine sounds of something – a machine maybe, meaningless data occurring along with desired information, indirect or unofficial comments, and a list of others. Whether it is sound or data, all definitions of noise seem to revolve around seemingly unwanted or dissonant information. To me, there is a clear connection to media and the noise it creates in our lives on a daily basis.
I encourage you to move to different spots in the space for a different perspective. There are a lot of little things to hear. |
Unlocked and Loading (2022)
Caroline Richards Sam Wheeler Luciano Medina |
Locked and Loaded, a phrase used to indicate that a firearm is loaded and ready to fire. UNLOCKED – the firearm is disassembled, leaving only pieces of metal. LOADING – what then can this material be used for instead of taking lives? How can it be re-purposed?
Unlocked and Loading is in two continuous movements. In the first, sounds typically associated with firearms are de-contextualized. And the second focuses on the words of poet, Rudy Francisco. “Someday that could be me” seems to suggest that there is a future where this metal is no longer used as a weapon, but re-purposed into something beautiful. |
This piece is inspired by "Rifle II," a poem by Rudy Francisco, which was itself inspired by the work of visual artist, Pedro Reyes, called
"Disarm" where Reyes composed pieces for instruments made out of gunmetal. Below you can find links to both artists' work and a website to donate to "Everytown," an organized movement to strengthen gun safety laws in America.

Post-Serotonia (2022)
Joel Ferst | saxophone Maggie King | violin Alvaro Miranda | cello Jeanne Hourez | piano |
I went through a phase once and this is the result. This piece is just a rock-inspired listening experience full of distortion, shredding, and walls of sound.
*Feel free to use earplugs for this one.* |
